![]() The key to Total Annihilation is learning to balance construction and resource management with maintaining an ever-growing military. But Battle Tactics only marginally succeeds at these intentions. The idea, apparently, was that these various tactical situations would be perfectly suited for the novice looking to become a real pro otherwise, they'd satisfy the veteran's fix for instant action. Mission briefings, meanwhile, are chock-full of useful tips and strategies. Many of these missions are purely tactical and are designed to force you to make do with what you're given and not worry so much about building your base and managing resources as in a typical game of Total Annihilation. These missions are categorized by length from very short to long and divided in half between the warring Arm and Core factions. ![]() The difference, in true Cavedog fashion, is that while the old Command & Conquer add-ons offered a little over a dozen missions, Battle Tactics presents a hundred. Like the original half-hearted add-ons for Command & Conquer and Red Alert, Battle Tactics is primarily composed of a series of disconnected single-player missions. ![]() While Battle Tactics is certainly a strong product by typical standards, it is disappointing in light of Total Annihilation's ambitious history. Anyone who's still playing Total Annihilation presumably knows the ropes by now. Between its late arrival and its proclaimed purpose as an instructional tool, Battle Tactics won't appeal or impress. Its problem isn't as specific as it is fundamental. Unfortunately, the second add-on isn't much of an encore. Meanwhile, the first official Total Annihilation add-on, The Core Contingency, offered a whopping 75 new units, and much more single- and multiplayer action, and was heralded as being among the all-time best supplements for a real-time strategy game. But even in the face of a major hit, Cavedog didn't rest on its laurels: It offered new units for download on a weekly basis, more multiplayer maps, and an editor, all to help fans maintain interest. With well over 100 units and two long single-player campaigns, Total Annihilation offered so much more than its competition that it compelled gamers to take a closer look, where they found a game whose quality matched its scope. All you need to enjoy any map from either map collection at File Universe is the TA Unofficial Patch, or the three map feature packs available from the Map Features folder for those who do not wish to use the patch. The success of Total Annihilation, Cavedog's 3D real-time strategy game, must be attributed in part to its sheer size. Every single map in the TA Maps r2010 collection has been fixed of technical bugs, cleared of potentially conflicting files, and given high quality minimap previews. The most notable improvement over the old File Universe is that the entire 8 GB TAMEC DVD map collection, along with several hundred other stray maps from various sources, have been fixed, minimapped, organized, and re-released as the TA Maps r2010 collection and is available from the Maps (r2010) folder (the nearly 12 GB File Universe map collection is available from the Maps folder). Combined with the 1 GB library of over 4,000 units at Unit Universe, it is the most up-to-date and complete Total Annihilation file archive ever assembled and contains almost everything ever released for the game. The Total Annihilation file library is larger and more comprehensive than ever, weighing in at 29 GB and containing almost 7,000 files in over 500 folders. ![]() The entire network of 50 Total Annihilation websites as well as the domain names and server are now fully under our control so there should be no more problems as far as the site is concerned. If you visit the forum you may know that it's a long story as to why the site went offline but the important thing is that the full File Universe file library, bigger and better than ever, is now permanently hosted on our new and improved server along with the rest of the Total Annihilation Universe Network. Welcome back to File Universe, returning in its fifth incarnation after over a year of absence. ![]()
